Carlos Villanueva threw a career-high eight strikeouts as the Toronto Blue Jays shut out the Cleveland Indians 3-0 on Sunday. Villanueva pitched three-hit ball through six innings before relievers Jason Frasor and Darren Oliver took over and stifled the Indians’ offence by allowing just two hits the rest of the way.

The Toronto Blue Jays will need to wait until next season to see if Sergio Santosis the closer they hope he is.

Santos will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery after he felt discomfort during a throwing session Saturday. The 29-year-old right hander is anticipated to return to the team for spring training, although a timeline won’t be established until after the surgery is completed.

Kevin Jepsen got Alex Rodriguez to pop out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and Los Angeles Angels took advantage of New York’s baserunning follies to beat the Yankees 10-8 Sunday.

Luis Leon Sanchez used his time trial experience to claim a solo victory and Bradley Wiggins retained the yellow jersey on a controversial day at the Tour de France when dozens of riders where impeded by tacks strewn across the course in the 14th stage.

Zach Johnson won the Deere on Sunday with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. His 193-yard 6-iron approach from the bunker left of the 18th fairway ran up to less than a foot from the cup for an easy birdie, enabling him to knock off Troy Matteson, whose approach landed 43 feet from the pin.

Landry Fields is finally a member of the Toronto Raptors.

The club announced early Sunday morning that it has signed the guard-forward after the New York Knicks chose to not match Toronto’s offer sheet for the restricted free agent.

Newly signed New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd has been arrested on a drunken-driving charge after police said he crashed an SUV into a telephone pole in the Hamptons. Southampton Town police say Kidd was released without bail after being arraigned Sunday on a misdemeanour driving-while-intoxicated charge.

The Toronto Raptors, in a deal designed to create some additional salary-cap space, have agreed to traded forward James Johnsonto the  Sacramento Kings for a future second-round pick, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Andrew Wiggins scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in Canada’s 100-86 loss to U.S. MVP James Young and USA Midwest in the championship game of the Nike Global Challenge Sunday at the D.C. Armory.

 Other Canadian highlights were Indiana commit Trey Lyles (21 points), point guard Tyler Ennis (18 points) and shooting guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes (14 points). Combined, the group went 3-1 here, including a win over USA East.
