Cesc Fabregas scored the deciding penalty Wednesday to give Spain a 4-2 shootout win over Portugal and a spot in the European Championship final. Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos also scored for Spain.

The Red Sox scored six runs in the first inning against a wild Ricky Romero, David Ortiz hit his 399th career homer and Boston beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 on Wednesday for its fifth straight series win. Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs and Mike Aviles added two as the Red Sox improved to 9-2 in their last 11 games.

The Los Angeles Angels aren’t particular about how they rack up the runs. Sometimes they’ll knock the ball out of the park, and often they will simply move around the bases one at a time.

The Angels did a little of both Wednesday night against the Baltimore Orioles, rolling to a 13-1 victory behind a 16-hit outburst that included 13 singles and a home run by Torii Hunter.

Reigning champion Novak Djokovic and six-time winner Roger Federer cruised into the third round, while three-time runner-up Andy Roddick notched an opening-round victory Wednesday at Wimbledon.

Outgoing Belgian star Kim Clijsters reached the third round, while reigning U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur suffered a second-round upset and former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was sent packing in round one at The Championships, Wimbledon.

The Calgary Flames have signed defenceman Dennis Wideman to a five-year, $26.25 million contract after acquiring his rights from the Washington Capitals in exchange for blueliner Jordan Henry and a 2013 fifth-round draft pick. Wideman, 29, was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Edmonton Oilers signed Ralph Krueger to a three-year deal. He replaces Tom Renney, who was let go as the team’s 10th head coach last month.

Plans for a new arena in a suburb just north of Toronto were unveiled at a council meeting on Wednesday and local residents were given the opportunity to pose questions to the business partners involved.

The $325 million complex that is expected to seat over 20,000 has been approved by Markham council with the city responsible for $162.5 million toward the final tally.

There may not be any mystery surrounding the first pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, but after the first overall pick, what happens next could be one of the most unpredictable first rounds in recent memory. The NBA draft happens this evening beginning at 7:30 est.
