Last week was quite a week in Sports. A lot of things happened, mostly good…some bad. So let’s recap shall we? Grab a coffee or tea, or Double Gulp and a bag of chips and let’s remember last week…fondly!
In Orlando, head coach Stan Van Gundy was fired. All week long Dwight ‘Supergoof’ Howard said he had nothing to do with it. Yeah right, and Bigfoot doesn’t exist.
The L.A. Kings eliminated the Coyotes in five games early in the week. The Kings end up with quite a lot of time off…..surf’s up! The Devils eventually eliminated the New York Rangers in six games. Marty Brodeur getting another kick at the can, hopefully the can isn’t nailed to the deck.
The Norfolk Admirals swept the Saint John IceCaps to advance to the Calder Cup Final. The Toronto Marlies took their series 4-1 over the Oklahoma City Barons to advance to the Finals. At least one team in Toronto is winning!
Kim Clijsters announced she is retiring following the U.S. Open……good tennis player, should go down in tennis history as one of the greats!
Former Maple Leafs defenceman and perennial Norris Trophy candidate Todd Gill was named head coach of the Canadian Under-18 men’s hockey team for the Ivan Hlinka Tourney in August…yep..hockey in August, the ratings will probably be great. Way to go #23!
Alain Vigneault signed a contract extension with the Canucks…did the L.A. Kings twitter account tweet anything? I missed it if they did…
Toronto FC won their fourth consecutive Amway Canadian Championship. TFC defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 on aggregate to claim another Voyageurs Cup. Well done Reds!
The Shawinigan Cataractes upset the defending Champion Saint John Sea Dogs in the Semi-Finals of the 2012 Memorial Cup. Shawinigan then went on to defeat the London Knights in the final to claim the 2012 Memorial Cup! Well done Shawinigan….I just like saying that Shawwwwwwinnnnniiiiiigan!
The Celtics eliminated the 76ers to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, against the Heat. The old three against the arrogant three. And the Heat took out the Pacers. About time.
Toronto FC got their first win of the MLS season with a late goal against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night….1-9 on the season so far! Not a good season for TFC, but a great week!
Canadian Ryder Hesjedal wins the Giro d’italia. First time a Canuck has won this race! Bring on the Tour de France!
There are reports that Dominik Hasek wants to return to the NHL. I think Dominik saw Jagr’s season and thinks he can have a similar one. Ah, nope. Someone tell this guy to retire for good please, otherwise Burke will sign him.
Scotty Bowman is awarded the Order of Canada…not bad…not bad….RUSH got it first…and I think Mike Holmes and Red Green also got theirs first.
The Spurs opened up the Western Conference Finals with a win against the young-upstart Oklahoma City Thunder! This should be a good series.
What a weekend for all you gearheads out there! Holy Moly! Mark Webber wins the famous Monaco Grand Prix, Dario Franchitti wins the Indy 500 and Kasey Kahne won the monsterously long Coca-Cola 600! Brad Keselowski wins the History 300 (Nationwide Series). I am not a huge racing fan by any means, but I was excited about this past weekend of racing! All massive races for each circuit. I would love to go watch the Monaco Grand Prix one of these days.
In golf, Luke Donald took over the #1 spot in the World Rankings with a win at the BMW Championship, toppling Rory McIlroy. And Zach Johnson won the Colonial Crowne Plaza Invitational. Without a dominant golfer on the Tour, each week is competitive it seems. Where is Mike Weir?
The French Open….opened….and what a surprise Andy Roddick was ousted right way. I am not a Roddick fan, so that news brought a smile to my pretty little face.
In baseball news, Roy Halladay left a game early on the weekend because of soreness in his shoulder. This better not be anything serious…I have Doc in a pool…and I need him pitching well cause Lincecum is not pitching well for me. It’s only a two-player-per-team pool…I have those two.
The Blue Jays had a terrible (how do I spell Barkley’s turrible? Is it turrible?) week. They took one of three against the Rays and then were swept three straight by the Rangers. The Rangers’ bats were unreal. Encouraging news though for guys like Rasmus, he is swinging the bat well. Bautista seems to be coming out of his slump and Encarnacion is hitting a ton right now. On other news Lawrie only had 165 RedBulls this past week.
The Roger Clemens trial…or re-trial…or second trial…whatever it is, is still ongoing. Sheesh. This is a lot of money being spent to see if he took steroids or not. Here is my political message for the week – leave it alone.
And in the NFL….yes the NFL…Tim Tebow continued OTA’s this past week. That is all that happened in the NFL. Oh wait, Giants WR Hakeem Nicks broke his foot and is out for about three months. Tebow thinks the foot will heal. And Donald Driver won Dancing American Survivor SIU. He only won because Tebow wasn’t in it. The Bucs signed Dallas Clark and shipped Kellen Winslow to the Seahawks, Tebow signed off on the deal. I now pronounce Winslow’s career dead. Andre Johnson also injured himself…again…so glad I traded him last season in my fantasy pool. I had that guy for years in a keeper league….played about half a season each time. I got Larry Fitzgerald for him straight up! Pretty good trade eh? Me smart like good. Tebow likey.
And last weekend, we opened the 2012 KanJam season at the cottage. My older brother and I began our title defence by going 3-0. My younger brother and his teammate were absolutely trounced. KanJam is sweeping the nation!
All in all, a pretty busy week! Sports are just awesome. I had a busy weekend that didn’t involve watching a lot of sports, but I tried to watch as much as I could…I promise I really did! Saturday rocked – a Jays game in the afternoon, with a TFC game late Saturday afternoon. Then Game #7 between the Rangers and Devils. Sunday was NBA, Jays and racing, racing, racing! French Open and golf in there too. So much on, so little time. I should watch sports fulltime. Tebow likey.
