Ryder Hesjedal has become the first Canadian to win the Giro d’Italia. Hesjedal used a strong performance in the individual time trial to win on the final stage of the race. Hesjedal had already made history earlier in the race by becoming the first Canadian to win the pink jersey as the overall leader.

Anton Zlobin scored his second goal of the game 17:51 into overtime to lift the Shawinigan Cataractes to their first MasterCard Memorial Cup title with a 2-1 victory over the London Knights on Sunday night. It was the first overtime in nine tournament games.

Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and the San Antonio Spurs won their 19th in a row to tie the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 to open the Western Conference finals on Sunday night.

Dario Franchitti stamped his name in the record books by winning his third Indy 500 on Sunday, a day that started and ended as a tribute to Dan Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. As his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart — Kanaan out front, Chip Ganassi teammates Franchitti and Dixon second and third — they couldn’t help but wonder if Wheldon was at play.

Kasey Kahne pulled away to victory in the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, winning NASCAR’s longest race for the third time and gaining his stripes for Hendrick Motorsports the only way that matters — taking the checkered flag.

If Mark Webber’s victory in the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position came as no surprise given the nature of the track, the Australian’s triumph on Sunday still made Formula One history and left the championship even more open after six races of a thrilling season.

For the first time ever in the sport, a sixth different driver has won each of the six opening races.

Adrian Beltre homered during a seven-run second inning, Yu Darvish posted his seventh victory and the Texas Rangers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 12-6 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

Kendrys Morales had three hits, including a home run, scored twice and drove in two runs to help the Los Angeles Angels complete their first four-game road sweep of the Seattle Mariners in 27 years with a 4-2 victory Sunday.

Luke Donald replaced Rory McIlroy at the top of the world rankings for the third time in 10 weeks by retaining the BMW PGA Championship title on Sunday, boosting his hopes of finally ending his major drought this summer.

Displaying his trademark consistency on the greens and from the tee, Donald cantered to a four-stroke victory at the biggest event on the European Tour by shooting a 4-under 68 — his fourth straight round under 70 — to finish on 15 under par at Wentworth.

French crowd favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina and former champion Juan Carlos Ferrero were among Sunday’s first-round winners at the French Open in Paris.

In an upset, Frenchman Nicolas Mahut took down Andy Roddick, the No. 26 seed, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, former champions Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova and sixth- seeded Samantha Stosur were among Sunday’s first-round winners at the French Open in Paris.
